[AffirmationstoDe-Stress] "No matter what..."

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 07:34 PM PDT

We must try to contribute joy to the world.
That is true no matter what our problems,
our health, our circumstances. We must try.
I didn't always know this and am happy
I lived long enough to find it out.

American Journalist, Film Critic and Screenwriter

People who don't drink, smoke or gamble

Most of us like to go somewhere warm for our holidays – but balancing on the brink of an erupting volcano could result in far more than mere sunburn. This incredible picture shows the moment when one tourist edged towards a torrent of spewing lava, risking life and limb for a holiday snap. Unfazed, with his back to the bubbling crater, the man smiles easily, as if he was standing next to an ornamental fountain.

Photographer Denis Budkov caught the incident at the Plosky Tolbachik volcano in the far east of Russia.

NOTE: some sources claim it was a woman and some it was a man.

Alexander J. Honnold (born August 17, 1985) is an American rock climber best known for his free solo ascents of big walls . He has broken a number of speed records, most notably the only known solo climb (mostly free climbing, but using some points of aid) of the Yosemite Triple Crown, an 18 hour 50 minute link up of Mt. Watkins, The Nose, and the Regular Northwest Face of Half Dome.

Located in Veracruz, the Metlac bridge rises 400 feet from the ground—making it Mexico's tallest bridge—and spans 300 feet. Risk taking local graffiti artists have thrown caution to the wind and taken to traversing the bridge's edges to get up. Impressive locations for sure, but is the danger worth it?

Good idea to fix the car, even better idea to get killed.

That's one big splash. Daredevil Garret McNamara of Hawaii claims to have ridden the highest wave ever caught by a surfer, a 30-metre monster off the coast of Nazaré, Portugal. His record is still to be confirmed, but if it's verified, McNamara will have smashed the previous record of 24 metres, which he set in the same spot in November 2011.

Indonesian students have to tightrope walk 30 feet above a flowing river to get to their class on time.

Here's a pro tip: if you ever find yourself with a strong desire to photograph crocodiles in their natural habitat, don't do it like the photographer in the video above (warning: it contains a bit of strong language).

It was shot by a man named David Clow on March 18, 2013 in Rio Tarcoles, Costa Rica. Clow's friend Antonio Ruiz was photographing crocodiles up close with his DSLR while others tossed chunks of meat into the water. The problem was that Ruiz positioned himself right on the edge of the river rather than at the relatively safe distance where everyone else was standing.

The location is named "Crocodile Bridge," so the water was teeming with crocs. After snapping some photographs of the creatures battling over the free food, Ruiz had an experience he will probably never forget. He just narrowly avoided a lunge by a hungry crocodile, coming inches from becoming its next meal.

If you have a fear of heights, just turn off your monitor now. The Ukrainian daredevil, Mustang Wanted, has a few photos from his fearless life to share. Check out this shot of him hanging from a building with one hand.

Mike Rutzen is an expert on the great white shark and an outspoken champion of shark conservation. His fame spread due to the images of his free diving exploits swimming with the animals without a cage. Mike has spent more time swimming cage-less with great whites than anyone else. He has since traveled the world lecturing on sharks and filming documentaries.

Students at this school in China have a harder time than most skipping class. Pupils in Pili - in the rugged northern Xinjiang Uygur region - have to cross a pass 1,500 ft. above a sheer drop down a precipice to get to their lessons. Guided by parents and staff, the youngsters scramble over the sloping rock face finding foot and handholds that would make even a goat think twice.

Help more kids develop a lifelong love of poetry

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 07:15 AM PDT

Dear Friends,

Happy National Poetry Month!

This April, many young people will read or write a poem for the first time, sparking what might just be a life-long appreciation of the art form.

"I became a poet partly because of poetry's great mystery, and partly because of a second-grade teacher I had who believed poetry was at the center of the universe," wrote Naomi Shihab Nye, a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets.

To assist teachers like Naomi's, this year the Academy of American Poets will distribute materials to more than 150,000 schools and libraries, and offer additional free educational resources on our website, Poets.org. But we have more to do to ensure that students have an opportunity to engage with poetry, and we need your help.

Earlier this year, we surveyed educators who have visited Poets.org. Overwhelmingly they shared their need for more poetry materials and resources, in print and mulitmedia, tailored to young learners. "Frankly, I'd appreciate anything," one teacher wrote, citing school budget cuts.

This April, we need you to help teachers bring poetry into their schools. Donate today. We hope to raise $10,000 this month, which will enable us to provide more audio and video of poets reading their work, as well as offer additional lesson plans and other resources on Poets.org.

With your support a new generation of writers will heed Rainer Maria Rilke's prompt in his Letters to a Young Poet: "Write about your sorrows, your wishes, your passing thoughts, your belief in anything beautiful." And a new generation of readers will be eagerly waiting for their words.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Benka
Executive Director, Academy of American Poets

Poem-A-Day: Another Elegy by Jericho Brown

Another Elegy
by Jericho Brown

To believe in God is to love
What none can see. Let a lover go,

Let him walk out with the good
Spoons or die

Without a signature, and so much
Remains for scrubbing, for a polish

Cleaner than devotion. Tonight,
God is one spot, and you,

You must be one blind nun. You
Wipe, you rub, but love won't move.

[Fropki] Sculptures Made from Suspended Sewing Buttons

Sculptures Made from Suspended Sewing Buttons

Augusto Esquivel is an artist from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Represented by the Now Contemporary Art Gallery in Miami, Augusto's work involves the use of thousands of carefully place, multi-coloured sewing buttons. On his website he describes his process:

"I am often obsessed with comparisons of reality and potential and the balance between them, in art: the idea of chaos in perfect order: an object seemingly solid to the eye can also be fragile and inconsistent to the touch; a common object used to create a piece of art becomes transformed into something complicated and intriguing.

I realize how insignificant and small a simple sewing button can be as it lays in my grandmother's sewing box, but at the same time how unique and precious it can become as part of a work of art. Like an atom in a molecule, each button serves and shapes the whole. I hold the button to my ear and it whispers to me, 'I want to be...'"

Below you will find a small sample of Esquivel's wonderful artwork.

[Fropki] Weirdest Ponchos

Posted: 08 Apr 2013 08:34 PM PDT

(Please let the pics open. Might take some time on a slower connection.

Taapsee Pannu's HOTTEST Avatars

Are these not the coolest ponchos you've ever seen? The Pac-Man Ghost Ponchos (officially called "retro arcade ponchos" for legal reasons) come in either red or blue. Of course Pac-Man can only eat the blue ones, so which one you choose depends on what side of the coin you're on. Made of recycled plastic, these ponchos cost just $15.08 each. Rain will no longer mean "game over" for you. Really cool.

Just because it's raining doesn't mean that the sun can't be out! Wear this breakfasty free rain'ge Egg Poncho (8.99) and you'll be the yolkiest, driest and most hilarious looking character around! Keep your day the way you like your eggs, sunny side up! The outdoors have never been so eggcelent on a rainy day! This may even prevent you from getting a runny nose from the cold rain! So don't be an egghead and keep yourself dry! Great for festivals!

Intergalactic poncho.

Convertible clothing is always pretty cool. Of course, we can always leave it to the Japanese to think of something even crazier. Given the weather this looks mighty appealing right about now. Taking the simple poncho to new heights, you can now own this poncho that converts into a tent.

When it comes to Lady Gaga fashion there is often little to say. An outfit made of Kermit the Frog puppets? Really? We're speechless.

In Germany, Gaga took a break from posing nude in bubbles or in broken disco ball dresses or gimp masks to wear something even more outrageous. Who needs sparkles, giant buttons or glass shards when you have an entire poncho - complete with matching head gear - of Kermit the Frog dolls?

There are holes for two people in this poncho, one for mom and the other for her baby.

WTF Poncho with a weird mask and an even weirder horse tail.

Dollar Poncho.

I don't know much about ponchos, but this is definitely not the way to use one.

World Records are a fascination to be the best, tallest, oldest, fastest, and sometimes even the weirdest individual that ever existed. Well the people of Nobsa, Colombia are no different. With their hard dedication and crafty artisan skills, a few years ago they leaped into the book of records for creating the largest poncho ever made. In the hopes of honoring the local artists the poncho was weaved for 2 months for the town's famous International Poncho Day which takes place every year in May. Over 1,500 pounds of wool were used to create the magnificent poncho, which was then properly displayed on top of the town's Cathedral.

This Tehran building mural is so well-executed that I had to take a moment to digest that it was a work of art and not some impossible, kooky architectural design. Located in Iran, this piece cleverly relies on an optical illusion that will have the residents doing double-takes.

Unfortunately, there is not much more information about the Tehran building mural besides where it resides. Check out the featured gallery to get a glimpse of this interesting artwork.

Building work is going on the corner of the Portland Street and Charlotte Street block in Manchester. Instead of scaffolding protected by plastic sheets, technological advances have led to giant photo montage reproductions of the actual building being renovated underneath.

Shop signs are then mounted on top, as we see here with the Ciao Bella and Ocean restaurants. This also goes around the corner where there is a giant advertisement hoarding the top of the mural, which is a shame.

This painting entitled "Original Sin" was created by SOKRAM for the DesOrdes Creatives Festival in Ordes, Spain. He effectively used the structures of the building like the doors and windows to create an illusion of depth in the painting.

At first glance, it looks like an earthquake destroyed the walls of this building. Amazingly, it's just an optical illusion - even the woman looking inside is fake.

The paintings, which have fooled many, were created by Californian-born artist John Pugh, who specializes in trompe l'oeil or "trick of the eye" art. He works on large scale murals in public and residential areas and his paintings can be seen all over the world from New Zealand to Hawaii, with many telling a story of the area where they are positioned.

Would you believe me if I told you that this fantastic portico doesn't really exist! It's "just" a mural, and what a mural, I must say! It was painted by an artist named Richard Haas on the facade of the Brotherhood building in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1983. This mural is a real example of trompe l'oeil ("to deceive the eye") or faux finishes, as some call them.

The building was designed by American muralist Richard John Haas in 1985. His murals have been commissioned as decoration for numerous public buildings in the United States. These include Chase Field, the Robert C. Byrd Federal Building & Courthouse in Beckley, West Virginia, the main branch of the New York Public Library, the Lakewood Public Library (Ohio), the Sarasota County, Florida Judicial Center and the former Board of Education building in Brooklyn, NY. One of his most renowned works, "Brooklyn Bridge," couples his artistic genius with his architectural background.

Trompe l'oeil is a visual illusion, often painted on the plain side of a building. You think what you are seeing is a three-dimensional scene. This example was photographed with a Pentax Optio S30 during June, 2005 on Roundstone Street, Trowbridge, Wiltshire.

In Lyon the walls tell stories, mostly very tall tales. While painting on walls is as old as time, the city has taken the art of modern urban wall painting to new heights with nearly 60 outdoor murals. Some are breathtaking flights of fancy; others are marvelous examples of trompe l'oeil, depictions of everyday life so realistic you could almost walk into them.

Interesting paintings on the facade of a house creating the illusion of windows with animals.

A German woman married an American gentleman born in Virginia and they lived happily ever after in his home town.

The poor lady was not very proficient in English, but did manage to communicate with her husband. The real problem arose whenever she had to shop for groceries.

One day, she went to the butcher counter and wanted to buy chicken legs. She didn't know how to put forward her request, so, in desperation, clucked like a chicken and lifted up her skirt to show her thighs. Her butcher got the message and gave her the chicken legs.

Next day she needed to get chicken breasts, again she didn't know how to say it, so she clucked like a chicken and unbuttoned her blouse to show the butcher her breasts. The butcher understood again and gave her some chicken breasts.

On the 3rd day, the poor lady needed to buy sausages. Unable to find a way to communicate this, she brought her husband to the store...

Poem-A-Day: On this Very Street in Belgrade by Charles Simic

Posted: 08 Apr 2013 03:37 AM PDT

On this Very Street in Belgrade

Your mother carried you

Out of the smoking ruins of a building

And set you down on this sidewalk

Like a doll bundled in burnt rags,

Where you now stood years later

Talking to a homeless dog,

Half-hidden behind a parked car,

His eyes brimming with hope

As he inched forward, ready for the worst.
